Back-up your stuff cloud...

It doesn't matter who you are these days, your assets have changed! We used to get our photos developed and put into an album, purchased music on records tapes or CDs, and kept personal banking and other finacial records in a checkbook or ledger. My how time have changed! Many of us no longer have these items. In fact some of our children have no idea of what some of these things are. Much of what we own these days either at home or in business is purely digital.

Computers Backing Up

When you think about it,  most music purchased now is downloaded, pictures are stored on your computer and financial records are also kept in a program on your computer. For businesses there are very few companies that keep their entire business running on paper. It's just to darn slow and, well the computer can do some thinking for us!

Quiet a bit of time and money is spent on these items and it's not uncommon for home users to have hundreds of dollars worth of music and other downloaded items on their personal computer. Businesses often have many thousands of dollars digital assets. For many the actual cost of the computer and programs on it pales in comparison to the cost of time, opportunity and perhaps salaries for employees that use the software.

While this observation might be noteworthy, the point is that every hard disk will fail. There isn't one that lasts forever. Yet, we trust these devices to store or important stuff more often than not without a proper back-up!

Now, we can insure alot of things like our cars, homes, boats and other items of value; but I haven't heard of any insurance company that insures your data! Often it's uninsurable and irreplacable. Who can replace those family photos? Who can replace that accounting data?

To get to the point this is where performing a good back-up is essential. There are a few ways to back-up. Some folks will back up music and photos to external drives, CDs  or other portable media. Businesses may do the same thing or use tape. The problem with these is that they are prone to failure, can get lost stolen, burned up or otherwise folded, spindled or mutilated! For home users who lose their stuff, it creates huge discomfort and sometimes tears. The ramification of a major data loss in a company that experiences such a misfortune, is that often the company does not survive more than six months.
